Note: If you’re making a killing on Facebook ads keep doing what you’re doing. The end.
But, if you’re spending money on Facebook ads and it feels like the only person benefiting is Zuck, read on to see how we approach it.
This isn’t the only way to win, it’s just one approach that has worked for us.
Facebook rewards engagement, so if you just run $10 a day to a Facebook ad with your product saying “Buy Now” you’re going to have a hard time unless your funnel is amazing!
We don’t run regular ads off the bat.
Instead we do this:
- Find something that is already super popular on social media.
- Create your version of that thing and post it
- Wait to see if it gets some traction (likes, shares, engagement)
- If and only if it gets traction, run ads against it. (will be cheaper)
- Attach pixels, build an audience, and then hit that audience with an offer This is how we’re able to get a ton of views and shares for our stuff while still getting conversions.
Example:
Found a video on buzzfeed on a completely different topic but it worked well and we created a version that spoke to our topic and audience.
Got some friends over and filmed it at my house on a phone.
Results: 1/2 a million views, 1100 shares, 700 comments and thousands thousands of email signups. $700.
We were then able to reach this pre-built audience with ads for a group trip and did numbers. If we hadn’t done this pre-work and just thrown up an offer we wouldn’t have sold a thing I bet.
So FB for us is a lot like email marketing. Build a big audience, nurture them, and then present an offer vs just running an ad with an offer.

***Note: Facebook and Chill does not work!**
I wrote this in response to the “How do I spend 75% of my time marketing” question so I’ll post here again.
Other things you should be doing in addition to running ads.
PRESS
- Do google searches for articles in major publications related to your product or service, find the name of the author and email or send them a tweet. Tell them you loved their article and that you’re doing something similar blah blah blah. Pitch.
INFLUENCERS
2) Compile a list of bloggers, youtubers, instagrammers, twitter accounts of folks that may be interested in your product and reach out to partner: free product plus discount code for their followers works well. You can hire a Virtual Assistant that can get out like a hundred emails per week (all personalized). $100 a week spent on a VA here will take you further than $100 spent on FB ads, I’d bet money.
CONTENT MARKETING
3) Find bloggers that allow folks to guest post and write a dope article and submit it with a link back to your site.
4) Post articles on LinkedIn
5) Write and answer questions on Quora (You didn’t think people legit just answer those questions for all that traffic did you? A lot of those perfect answers were answered because the same person wrote the perfect question!
6) look at the type of content that is going viral on buzzfeed (their trends tell you what was the most popular thing in the last week). Go create some content like that.
*The best predictor of what will be successful is what has already been successful*
“STEAL” FOLLOWERS
7 ) Find big media outlets that your target audience would be interested in and follow the followers of that media outlet on Twitter. A small % will follow you back and you can then engage and build relationships.
TWITTER SEARCH📷 Do Twitter Advanced searches for people mentioning terms related to your product and engage, follow, like, chat. Like right now about 5,000 people per week use the term baecation on Twitter. You just put together a strategy to reach them.
FORUMS
9) Find forums around your product or service and engage
EMAIL MARKETING
10) run email campaigns to past purchasers and your email list
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS11) Find complementary products and see if they will do an email blast for you in exchange for you doing an email blast for them
12) contact sub box companies and see if they would put your marketing flyer in their box in exchange for you marketing their box on your social media
FACEBOOK GROUPS
13) Start a facebook group around your brand and nurture it with contests and cool content and run promotions, vip giveaways etc. We start a FB group for each business…way better engagement than pages.
CONTESTS
15) Run gleam.io or kickofflabs contests where you give away something small in exchange for facebook likes/tweets/emails etc.
The list is long and it’s just the tip of the iceberg. This all boils down to:
- Seeing where your audience hangs out and go hang out there
- Seeing how you can leverage other brands followers to become yours.
Good luck peeps..diversify those sources of traffic if you can and don’t let Facebook take all your hard earned monies! 📷
Okay off to watch some ball. Playoff games are buzzing!!!
