My formula for building businesses is the same each time:
-Find something that people already buy.
-See if that thing has made a LOT of people a ton of money.
-Go sell that thing. Aggressively!
——
I’ll walk through an example super quickly!
Say I wanted to build a meal delivery service like Plated.
https://www.plated.com/
Super random I know but this is the first example that came to me.
WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DO FIRST
Let me get a logo done.
For us? Nah.
Logos gets you stuck for no good reason. Logo comes last, or maybe even never. (And by never, check plated’s logo out. They just chose a font and wrote the word out in text.
WHAT WE DO FIRST INSTEAD:
Instead of a $400 logo, we just put $400 more to that and get a dope homepage for like $800. We don’t try to find suppliers or teams or any of that before we get a homepage.
Suppliers then come easily if you have a good homepage design and you look official.
So when it’s time to find suppliers we can just send an email like,
Hi, my name is Rohan, founder of Dope Meals, peep out our website here: dopemealsdotcom. We’ve personally ordered your sirloin steak and let me just say…”amazeballs!” What are your best rates for sirloin if we were to start with a small order of 50 pieces, with a view to building a long-term relationship?”
That’s it, no begging, no “I’m a new business and I’m just wondering…” Nah son.
We are who we want to be TODAY!
Once we have that dope homepage design we’re then able to navigate and negotiate like we deserve a seat at the table.
This is exactly what we did with our vacation rental site. We created a solid homepage and then reached out to property managers telling them why they should list with us. That got us to 200,000 properties in 9 months. I was literally in my bedroom negotiating with multi-million dollar companies in Europe based on this approach.
No one would have taken us seriously if all we had was a coming soon LaunchRocket page or something like that. I personally never do them.
I go straight to the homepage even if it has a popup for email capture telling people we’re coming soon.
As usual, none of what any one person does will work for everyone else.
Just sharing what we do to get our wins.
Straight to the dope homepage for us, it helps with suppliers, employees, press, everything else we need to get traction. And logos are an afterthought.
Good luck!
